Folk Art & Festivities of Japan

In Japan, spring is the time for children’s celebrations. March is Hina Matsuri or Girl’s Day and May is Tangu No Sekku or Boy’s Day . These celebrations are the root of Children’s Day Celebrations around the world. In this class we will explore some of the traditions from these holidays and we will create items based on pieces from the Hand-in-Hand Folk Art Collection. A great workshop to share with your child or if you are into Japanese Folk Art!

Images of Independence

The year 2010 marks the 200 year anniversary of the Mexican fight for Independence and also the100 year anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. The Revolution gave birth to great artwork that spoke to the need for social change. The great murals of the day are well known, but there were also great printmakers such as Jose Guadalupe Posada who’s imagery spoke of social justice, folk life, and history. In this class we will learn basic printmaking techniques and create prints inspired by imagery of these historical events.
